Google user surveilance @ $25 per head!

November 19th, 2010

A security and privacy expert ‘Christopher Soghoian’ has revealed that Google are charging the US governement $25 per user that it wishes to spy on.

Sioghan took advantage of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) by requesting a document which details four years worth of spending by the Drugs Enforcement Agency on wiretaps and pen registers.  A wiretap will retrieve phone and web discussions, pen register is intended to retrieve numbers and addresses of those communicating. The document exposed by Soghoian shows a total of $73.4 million was spent on surveilance by the DEA on surveillance in 2010. Huge numbers there that Microsoft appear to be missing out on having made the choice not to charge the government for user surveillance!

The UKs most unpolitically correct xmas toy – ‘Spastic The Transformer!’

November 18th, 2010

News just in that ‘Hasbro’ the toy manufacturer have made a royal cock up by introducing a new Transformer called ‘Spastic’, oh and dont forget it comes with ‘Stunticons’??!!

spastic the transformer The UKs most unpolitically correct xmas toy Spastic The Transformer!

Now this really could be the toy of the year as im sure collectors will snap these up for crazy prices.

This new un PC transformer forms part of their ‘Power Core Combiners 2011 Wave 2′ range.

Someone in the marketing and research department at hasbro is due a slap, obviously not realising that the term ‘spastic’ is not the most ideal name in the UK for a childrens toy. Wisely they have pulled the toy from its retail channels in Europe and UK.

Fan site Seibertron originally raised the issue with Hasbro who gave this official comment:

“Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention and for the opportunity to respond. The TRANSFORMERS brand intended no offense by use of the name “SPASTIC” for one of its products which has not and will not be available via traditional retail channels in Europe, including the UK. Thank you once again for notifying us about your concern. As a marketer of children’s products, input from parents, families and fans regarding their experiences with our brands is extremely important to us. Our goal is to have all families who enjoy our brands feel good about their purchases and experiences.”

EETimes quoted Allan Yogasingam, UBM TechInsights technical manager “Basically, the strength of the design is the huge design win for the Israeli fabless company PrimeSense,”.

The analaysis carried out by UBM TechInsights  also describes some of the technology used according to EETimes “The Kinect includes four audio microphones on the front console that pinpoint where a user is standing by auditory projection”.

Kinect detects motion with use of a single infrared camera plus two image sensors. Interestingly Allan Yogasingam also commented on the use of the technology for changing channel on TV sets “I can see this being incorporated into televisions—allowing users to chang the channel by waving their hand,  essentially replacing the remote control.”.
Kinect which was released earlier this week is set to become a christmas favourite for xbox 360 fans along with the Call Of Duty Black Ops release from Treyarch. Kinect was produced with the aim of tempting  some of the many Nintendo Wii fans to switch to Xbox 360, im sure that time will tell..
